Black Celestial Connections:
Remembering Nat Turner

Saturday, August 20, 2022
7:30-9pm EST

On August 21, 1831, Nat Turner embarked upon a revolutionary campaign to free himself and other enslaved Africans from bondage in Southampton County, Virginia. Turner would rally over 70 freed and enslaved men to his cause, forming what would become one of the largest slave rebellions in American history. After looking to the sky and its celestial bodies for divine guidance, he became convinced that the time to liberate himself and his community had come.

This was an event centered around remembrance, stargazing, and group reflection about what freedom means to us. Just as our ancestors looked to the sky with their naked eyes, no telescope or special equipment were required!
