Memoir

My memoir-in-development tells the story of how my understanding of love and knowledge were irrevocably transformed on the landscape through a series of extraordinary events that began in 2020. My father died that year, prompting me to return to my hometown in Ohio where the painful contradictions that had held my family and our nation together—related to race, gender, and domination—exploded into greater visibility. Dreams and other surprising sources of insight began reshaping my relationship to this complex inheritance, radically altering my understanding of self and home on the landscape.

My Substack, The Heart of Knowledge, includes this quarterly segment that offers updates on my memoir-in-progress with a focus on my creative process. This segment also explores what is distinctive (and valuable) about narrating events—historical and otherwise—in the first person from my vantage point as someone who produces historical scholarship.
